Note: This is the very latest model of the HFN pickup that has the new ABS base. This replaces the original model that had a rosewood base. The new ABS base transfers more resonance from the soundboard to the pickup sensor, which provides increased clarity and detail, along with slightly higher output.
The Schatten HFN-S2 Passive Guitar Pickup is a high quality piezo transducer with a prewired endpin jack designed for internal installation on Selmer/Maccaferri Gypsy Jazz guitars. This pickup is specifically designed to fit most Selmer/Maccaferri models, including Hawaienne, Espagnol, Concert, Orchestre, Tenor 4 Cordes, and Jazz, both petite bouche (small oval soundhole) and grande bouche (large D soundhole).

The Schatten HFN-S2 pickups give you a sound that is much more realistic than that of under-the-saddle pickups and is quite close to the sound of a good microphone. Along with being simple to install, the HFN-S2's have excellent feedback rejection and good string-to-string balance. There is nothing artificial about the sound of the HFN-S2 and it does not have the usual compressed 'quackiness' inherent in most undersaddle pickup systems.
The HFN-S2 will fit virtually all Selmer style instruments with 'normal' Selmer style bracing. The standard Selmer bracing has the 2 main transverse braces set at 1.9" apart, center to center and the bracing thickness averaging between 0.300" to 0.350". The HFN-S2 pickup is designed to fit this set of standard design parameters.
The HFN-S2 is not designed to fit Favino style instruments when those instruments use a Favino brace spacing that puts the 2 main transverse braces 2.9" apart, center to center. The HFN-S2 also will not fit the new MM series from Aria. The 2 main transverse braces on these instruments is approximately 2.56" apart.
Note: A two piece tool kit (part #S2-TOOLKIT) is available separately for installing the pickup into instruments having the smaller soundholes (petite bouche). Larger soundhole and D shaped soundhole (grande bouche) instruments do not need the tool kit as the opening in these instruments is easily large enough to get one's hand in.
The HFN-S2 series of pickups was designed to use a preamp; either built into your instrument or an external preamp. If you already have a preamp built into your instrument or if you have an outboard preamp, the HFN-S2 Passive model will work with virtually all of those units.
If you do not have a preamp in your instrument and wish to have everything onboard in one neat and tidy package, then you should be purchasing the HFN-S2 Active or HFN-S2 Artist model instead of this one. Should you not wish to have an onboard preamp and battery, then the Schatten Mini-Pre preamp will match up perfectly with the HFN-S2 passive pickup.
