Most cuatro pickups are designed as stick-on body transducers, which tends to emphasize midrange tones, resulting in a somewhat hollow, boxy sound, with boomy bass and lack of string definition. Using an undersaddle pickup helps to avoid the midrange emphasis that a body transducer can produce, resulting in a much brighter, sweeter sound with excellent string definition and clean, tight bass response. A preamp is recommended with this pickup, but not required.
